Here is an interesting document from Robert Ferraro on Model Maturity. The idea grew out of a question about how one could measure the maturity of a model during its development life, akin to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale that NASA uses to assess the maturity of evolving hardware technologies. The document includes some anonymous comments on the text. Right now, there is no standard for determining and communicating how mature a model really is - and what pitfalls the casual user should be aware of. This state makes it difficult to move forward towards the integrated MAP modeling environment that was envisioned at the beginning of the program. If this community is truly to move forward towards an integrated Earth system model, some way of measuring the maturity of its building blocks needs to evolve.
